I have a feeling you can get into big trouble if you use an Emoji heart that is the wrong color. Especially if you are using it to communicate with someone who has a fixed idea what all the different colors mean.
As we say here in Durban, “You need to make sure you are surfing in the same pipeline.”
I love the look of the brightly colored hearts, but I’m always afraid that I’m going to make a heart color faux pas and either get blocked or develop a stalker.
Blue Emoji Heart
Take the blue heart emoji for example. Some say it symbolizes trust and loyalty. That is great, and blue is the color of the sky, so I guess it can also symbolize infinite love. But do you know it is also the color that BDSM practitioners use?
I’m not at all judgemental and I’m fine with consenting adults doing whatever they like, but I don’t want to be thinking trust and commitment when the other party is cracking a whip.
Emojis on Different Devices
After checking out emojipedia and a few other sites, I realized to my dismay that emojis appear differently on a range of systems and devices. And it is not only the appearance; they seem to have a wide range of meanings.
I have fortunately not yet come to totally depend on emoji’s but I wonder if the day will come that we shorten all human communication to symbols? In some ways it would probably be safer, but only if the two parties involved in the communication understand the same meanings to the symbols. This is still not helping me much.
I spend far too much time searching for the perfect emoji.
So what do the different colored heart emojis mean? Well I guess it depends on which platform you are communicating.
WhatsApp seems to have slightly different meanings for the colored emoji hearts.
And Instagram has its own interpretation. So you need to know where you are when you are putting a colored heart in a tweet or a post.
Top Emoji Requests for 2018
Do you want to know what the top emoji requests are for 2018?
According to emojipedia, “One of the most requested this year is the addition of a white heart emoji. This would complement the “Black Heart of 2016 and the Orange Heart of 2017.” Maybe the White Heart will be neutral, like Switzerland?
So here’s what heart emojis really mean, as far as I can determine … from sorrow, to friendship to falling in love.
Because of all the variations and nuances, I think I’ll be very careful with these hearts and stick to the <3
